materi telling the time

When someone who uses the 12 hour time system asks us about time, we might hesitate to tell the time in detail. It is quite confusing for us, Indonesian, because English uses the term of ante meridiem (a.m.) and post meridiem. Ante meridiem (a.m.) is used to tell 00.00
(midnight) until 12.00 (noon). Post meridiem (p.m.) is used to tell 12.00 (noon) until 12.00 (midnight). Now you know the concept of a.m. and p.m. right? Then, how to ask for the time in English. The basic question forms you may use to ask for the time right now are:

  • What time is it?
  • What is the time?

Or you can use a more polite way to ask for the time, especially from a stranger is:

  • Could you tell me the time please?

Moreover, below are some common questions you may use to ask at what time a specific event will happen:

  • What time...?
  • When...?
  • What time does the flight to Jakarta leave?
  • When does the bus arrive from Semarang?
  • When does the live music concert begin?

Then, the following terms are for telling the time and their meaning in Indonesian.

O’clock : Tepat
Past         : Lebih
A quater         : Seperempat
A half : Setengah
To         : Kurang
A half past : Lebih setengah (30 minutes)
A quarter past : Lebih seperempat
A quarter to : Kurang seperempat

According to the terms above, below are the rules of telling the time in English.

  • To tell the exact hour, or the long needle is at number 12, we use the term “O 'clock”.

  • To tell hours when it's past the minute, we use "past". Past is used for passed minutes between the numbers 12 to 6. While, for more than a quarter we use “a quarter past”, for more than half we use “a half past”. Pay attention! In English, mention the hour first and then the time

  • To tell the deficiency of time, we use "to". "To" is used for hours less between the numbers 6 to 12. When it less than a quarter we use a quarter to. Pay attention! In English, mention the less of the first time. Note: For less /to, hour plus 1.

Examples:

When it is 15 minutes past the hour we normally say: (a) quarter past
•8:15 – It is (a) quarter past eight

When it is 15 minutes before the hour we normally say: a quarter to
•15:45 – It is (a) quarter to four

When it is 30 minutes past the hour we normally say: half past
•4:30 – It is half past four (but we can also say four-thirty)

That's all, a little bit of information about telling time in English. Hope it will be useful.
