Discussing about the date, it can't be separated from the terms day, month, and year. Dates consist of the complementary elements. In the previous post the author has discussed about Number, days of the week and months of the year. Now it's time to complete the discussion related to them, the author on this post will discuss about telling the date and its rules in English.
Based on the "Merriam Webster's Dictionary" date is the time at which an event occurs, example: the date of his birth on this date in history. Remember, to write a date / day in English we use an ordinal number instead of a cardinal number. Please brush up your mind again for those who do not understand about the types of number in English before discussing about telling the date in English.
Telling or writing the date, you should pay attention on the format. The format that is commonly used is mm/dd /yyyy or dd/ mm/ yyyy. mm means month, dd means day or date number, and yyyy means year. Example: mm/dd /yyyy: 20/05/1998: May the twentieth, ninenteen ninety eight.
There are some different rules to mention the year. If the year is below 2000, we must read two digits. For more details, read the following example:
1999 : Nineteen ninety nine.
1994 : Nineteen ninety four.
1990 : Nineteen ninety.
1985 : Nineteen eighty five.
1943 : Nineteen forty three.
Moreover, it is not allowed to read the year in the way of saying cardinal numbers, for example, for 1999, it shouldn't be read one thousand nine hundred and ninety nine.
In the other hand, for the year of 2000 and above can be read as a cardinal number, for example, in 2003 we can read as two thousand and three.
Furthermore, there are two styles of writing and saying the date. They are:
British Style
Ordinal number + month + year
For example : 25 Desember 2019 → 25th December 2019
Day + , + ordinal number + of + month + year
For example:
Senin, 11 Januari 1992 = Monday, 11th of January 1992.
Minggu, 17 Oktober 2019 = Sunday, 17th of October 2019
American Style
Month + Ordinal number + year
For example : 17 Agustus 1945 = August 17th 1945
Day + , + month + ordinal number + year
For example : Senin 1 Mei 1998 = Monday, 1st 1998
